The Bull Ring has always been at the heart of the city. From its
beginnings as a market place in the 1800s to the innovative shopping
destination of the 1960s, the Bull Ring has seen many changes. The greatest change of all is now
complete after it was opened by city council leader Sir Albert Bore on 4th

The Bullring shopping centre is set to
transform the face of retail in Birmingham.
The 110,000 square metre development forms part of a wider ?800 million
partnership investment in Birmingham's new retail promise by The
Birmingham Alliance. Bullring is set to bring the heart back into the city
centre, creating a fantastic shopping experience with a superb mix of
retailers.
The overall investment by the Birmingham Alliance covers over 40 acres in
the city centre - that's bigger than 26 football pitches - and will
revitalise the city. Over 8,000 new jobs will also be created.
Bullring is the largest city centre retail regeneration scheme in Europe
and will open in early September 2003.
The new shopping area will take advantage of the natural slope of the
city, which drops down 60 feet from New Street down to St Martin's Church,
by creating shopping streets and open spaces on three levels.
|
|
Carefully designed to fully integrate with the city centre, Bullring will
draw people from all directions enabling them to visit the superb range of
shops and cafes on each level.
One of the more dramatic highlights of Bullring's construction over the last few months has been the installation of the scheme's spectacular 7,000m2 skyplane roof. This virtually invisible expanse of glass forms a covering over Bullring's seemingly 'open' malls to give the impression of a natural extension of the city's key shopping streets, High Street and New Street, linking them to Debenhams and Selfridges respectively.
